Representations of animals attempt to inhabit their consciousness, while others document the stark reality of animal survival in a world dominated by the humans. Animal bodies, in plaster, steel and bronze emphasize the very real presence of animals, and bring their living reality into dialogue with imaginative and philosophical considerations.

The Animal of the title refers to material bodies, object, idea, living being, or classification. It incorporates the complex forms that inhabit the world and include all things living, from human animal to bat to mammal. The exhibition features work by artists: Lois Andison, Kenn Bass, Dagmar Dahle, Tom Dean, Rebecca Diederichs, John McEwen, Arnaud Maggs, Lyndal Osborne, Su Rynard and An Whitlock. Together their works invoke systems of categorization and nomenclature, evolutionary theory and extinction, which lead us to consider how thinking around the natural world has formed our relationship to it.

ANIMAL demonstrates the close and yet illusive relations between human and non-human animal, philosophy and material bodies, and between history and contemporary lived experience

Deanna Bowen’s Stories to pass on… is an exhibition comprised of two installation works: Gospel (2008) and Shadow on the Prairie (2009).  Both works stem from a road trip the artist took in 2006 where she located the Alabama plantation her family was enslaved on.

Gospel is an interdisciplinary suite of works (photo series, video installation & audio/sculptural work) that explore complex notions of trauma and recurrent sorrow. Alternately framed as a song of loss and longing, the combined works form a surreal semi-autobiographical account of a daughter's repudiation of mother, family, and home. The suite combines photographs of found hymn books, a sculptural/audio work, and a single channel video projection that uses appropriated footage from King Vidor's "Hallelujah" and John Stahl & Douglas Sirk's "Imitation of Life." 

Shadow on the Prairie
is an interdisciplinary installation (video installation & vinyl floor text) that derives its name and overarching narrative from the National Film Board of Canada’s 1952 film adaptation of Gweneth Lloyd’s seminal ballet "Shadow on the Prairie: A Canadian Ballet."  Performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company in 1952, the dance tells the story of Canada’s western settlement by means of a tragic tale of a once hopeful woman’s desperate struggle with the harsh landscape. Isolated by a long bleak winter, the young bride’s dreams of a new life with her pioneer husband fade away as she descends into a madness that leads to death. Finding affinities between Lloyd’s portrayal of the challenges of pioneer life and Bowen’s own family narrative, the semi-autobiographical work explores a family rumour about her great uncle, an allegedly closeted gay actor & nightclub singer who played in all-black revues of Vancouver's supper club circuit in the 1930's through the 50's.

Utilizing video, objects, performance and installation, Jon Sasaki’s work takes cynicism, futility and tragedy as starting points, countering the thematic heaviness with dry, comic delivery. Jon investigates an eternal optimism that, while endearing and charming, is filled with the trappings of failure. Given that all things that pass do not end in a result that one might hope for, the inherent possibility for failure becomes an opportunity to find beauty, or to discover a sweetened sense of the human condition. An unfulfilled promise still has its origins in an earnest belief and still delivers the notion of one who tries... really, really hard.
