Models for Taking Part brings together media works by international artists. The works in the exhibition are critical interpretations of the public sphere as an idea and ideal that intersects uneasily with factional and even personal interests, and is thus constantly thrown into fragments.

GORDON MONAHAN / SEEING SOUND/ SOUND ART, PERFORMANCE AND MUSIC 1978 - 2011

May 25 - Sep 22, 2012

The exhibition looks at 30 years of work by sound and multimedia artist Gordon Monahan. Monahan’s works for piano, loudspeakers, video, kinetic sculpture and computer-controlled sound environments hybridize various genres from science, music, performance art and avant-garde concert music to multimedia installation and sound art. As a composer and sound artist, he juxtaposes the quantitative and qualitative aspects of natural acoustical phenomena with elements of media technology, environment, architecture, popular culture and live performance.

RURAL READYMADE

Jan 13 - May 5, 2012
Curated by Shauna McCabe

Organized by the College Art Galleries in partnership with the Confederation Art Centre

Curator Talk/Tour: Friday, January 13 at 7pm

Artists: Janice Wright Cheney, Eryn Foster, Will Gill, Geoffrey Hendricks, Adriana Kuiper, Doug Lewis, Landon Mackenzie, Norma Jean MacLean, Kim Morgan, Jeff Nachtigall, Clint Neufeld, Brenda Pelkey, Ryan Suter

The effectiveness of the “readymade” has centred upon its probing of a key tension and confusion – between what is, and what is not, art. This exhibition will feature work by a number of contemporary artists who explore the mutability of interpretation and meaning through an investigation of the idea of the readymade in contemporary experience. Focusing on everyday surroundings where the use and adaptation of found materials are deeply engrained, the work of these artists playfully and adeptly blurs registers – between the mundane and aesthetic, low-tech and no-tech, found and familiar. The collective vernacular that emerges in the Rural Readymade is one that speaks of an agile and persistent drive towards the creative reimagination of art and everyday life.
